The store was first opened in 1929 by the late William Chadd. It has remained in family ownership, growing from a single fronted haberdashery shop to become Hereford's leading department store.

Chadds remains to this day an independent, family-owned and run store. There have only ever been 3 managing directors. The present Chairman, John Chadd, is very much ‘hands-on’ and four members of his family are employed full-time in the business.
